Abstract

The popular fruit tree of Annona muricata L. known as sour sop is a widely distributed plant in the central and south America and tropical countries. Leaves of Annona muricata has been reported to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The anti-ulcer study in rats [three groups, n=7] was performed with a dose of 200mg/kg of Annona muricata. In this study, the gastro-protective effects of the methanolic extract of Annona muricata leaves were investigated against ethanol-induced gastric injury models in rats. Gross and histological features showed the antiulcerogenic characterization of methanolic extract of Annona muricata. There was significant suppression on the ulcer lesion of rat pre-treated with it, which was observed by an increase in the thickness of the mucosa, attenuation of infiltration of leukocyte and attenuation of haemorrhage.
